How MAC Angels Can Help

There are a number of organizations focused on raising the dollars needed to fund cutting-edge research, and to finding treatments and a cure for ALS. The goal of the MAC Angels Foundation is to compliment these efforts, by filling the "survivorship" gap for ALS families in need.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for patients, family members and caregivers impacted daily by ALS, by providing the compassion, education and unique resources needed to manage the devastating effects of this disease.

ALS is a degenerative and debilitating disease that creates special living needs for ALS patients. Our Angels will sit in your living room, listen to your concerns, and recommend individualized solutions for your specific needs. MAC Angels programs and services include:

Building Your Network — MAC Angels will work to create and organize your personal network, to help coordinate the circle of family and friends who want to provide their assistance. This means helping ALS patients and caregivers to think through many of the daily routines we would normally take for granted, such as planning meals, taking the patient to the doctor or the pharmacy and making sure the needs of children of its patients are met.

Legal & Insurance Benefit Processing Services — Assisting families navigate the complex process of acquiring benefits, including health insurance and Social Security. MAC Angels is partnering with a top-tier law firm to provide pro-bono services for our families.

Healthcare Providers — Providing assistance so that you can make informed choices about treatment and care.

Living with ALS — Helping families to re-configure their living spaces to accommodate a person living with ALS and to find the furniture and equipment needed to address the mobility limitations that come with ALS. We can let you know what's available and connect you with suppliers, and provide advice to help you select what is most appropriate to your needs.

Advocacy — In 2006, Senator Chris Dodd introduced The Claire Collier Social Security Disability Insurance Fairness Act which would amend the Social Security Act to provide that the eligibility standard for disability insurance benefits not be applicable in the case of a disabled individual suffering from a covered terminal illness. Although this bill has yet to pass, MAC Angels will continue to support this and similar legislation that will benefit all ALS families.
